What Is Bullying?

Bullying is an act of committing physical or mentally abuse to other people which can cause them to experience of being assault. Bullying is persistent unwelcome behavior, mostly using unwarranted or invalid criticism, nit-picking, fault-finding, also exclusion, isolation, being singled out and treated differently, being shouted at, humiliated, excessive monitoring, having verbal and written warnings imposed, and much more (bullyonline.org, n. d.). Bullying is an aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions (olweus.org, 2011).

Bullying does not only take form of physical violence, but it also involves other forms of violence such as mental violence and rational violence. The number of cases of bullying has increase day by day. According to Malaysian Psychiatric Association, 64% of kids had been bullied at school. These show that the bullying problems have become major problems to the nation. Almost every day the news on bullying appear in media either printed media or electronic media. Hence, bullying must be prevented in order to maintain a good value among people and society.

Bullying is a form of abuse either emotionally or physically. It consists of repeated act to someone that can lead to mental and health problems. Bullying usually occur when a group of powerful people trying to intimidate someone who are less powerful in order to please their satisfaction of looking down at others. Bullies are generally more aggressive than the victims. Bullying is a pervasive type of aggression, which often occurs in schools. As with other types of aggression, the harm that is inflicted – whether physical, emotional or both – is intentional.

However, bullying has defining features which set it apart from other aggressive behaviors, in that it is repeated, and that the bully or bullies have greater access to power than their victims (James, 2010). They always try to threaten their victims using various ways. The bullies usually have advanced social capability that allows them to manipulate others. Nevertheless, there are some bullies that have poor social skill and unable to manage a good relationship with others. So, they think that with bullying, they will feel more secure and powerful. In addition, bullies usually come from a problematic family or a very strict and discipline family. Usually, bullies tend to express their anger at home towards their victims.
